Take a look at some of the most common causes below.

.

The Most Common Causes of Back Pain

When people come to see us, there are a variety of possible reasons why someone might suffer from back pain. The most common cause of low back pain involves mechanical issues and soft tissue injuries. Sometimes, this can include damage that takes place in the nerve roots, spinal discs, and even issues related to the movement of spinal joints themselves. When we take a look at our patients, we often discover that the cause of low back pain involves a torn muscle or a pulled ligament, often called a sprain or a strain, respectively. A low back strain can happen suddenly when muscles are stretched too far. When this happens, small tears can develop in the muscle fibers, leading to back pain. In contrast, a back sprain happens when someone stretches ligaments too far. Ligaments are used to connect bones together. If someone has a ligament sprain in the back, this can lead to back pain.

Understanding Chronic Back Pain

In contrast, there are other causes of chronic back pain. Back pain is considered chronic if it lasts for more than three months. Common causes of chronic back pain include joint problems, irritated nerve roots, and issues related to the discs in the back. A few common examples include:

  • Herniated Disc: A herniated disc is a spinal disc that has ruptured. The soft, jelly-like interior of a herniated disc can leak out of the disc and irritate nerve roots in the area, leading to back pain.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Another common cause of back pain is called degenerative disc disease. This happens when discs start to lose their water and hydration. Over time, they start to wear down. Then, the vertebrae start to rub against each other, leading to pain.
  • Spinal Stenosis: This is a condition that leads to the narrowing of the canal through which the spinal cord travels. This narrowing can lead to pain in the back due to severe nerve irritation.
